Dr Sarah’s Zingy Sunshine Smoothie bowl

Do you ever experience those mornings? You know the sort: when you wake up and wish you could fall straight back to sleep. When your whole body aches with tiredness, and even hauling yourself out of bed feels like an effort?

Well, you’re not alone. According to a study by YouGov, almost 70% of Brits regularly wake up feeling tired. And this is a statistic which only seems to be growing: as time goes by, our lives become busier, and our work-life balance gets even harder to manage.

Of course, there are many suggestions on dealing with this type of morning burnout. Some common ones include:

  • Caffeine
  • Mindful walks, or other exercise
  • Reducing screen time
  • Spending time with loved ones
  • Finding a healthier work-life balance

And all of these are incredibly important - but they’re missing out on one key thing. The best way to set up your day is with a healthy, delicious breakfast.

It sounds obvious, but almost 40% of us regularly skip breakfast. Without replenishing our body’s vitamins and energy sources after a long night’s rest, we’re at a much higher risk of exhaustion and low mood during the day.

So, how do we find the time in the mornings to prepare a vitamin-rich, energy-boosting dish?

Well, according to Dr Sarah Brewer, it’s simple: you do it the night before.

Dr Sarah's Sunshine Smoothie Bowl Recipe:

Ingredients:

2 sweet clementines

1 frozen mango - you can buy them pre-prepared, or dice it and put it in the freezer yourself.

1 frozen banana - either pre-frozen, or frozen at home.

1 frozen passionfruit - “I would recommend pouring the pulp into an ice cube tray, for ease later on.”

1 scoop of Sunrise Spark Morning Shot

Milk - any is fine, but semi-skimmed or almond milk works well.

1tsp of turmeric

1tsp of Sacred Flower Kanuka Honey

Toppings (feel free to mix and match, or add your own!):

Orange or clementine slices

Banana slices

Chia seeds

Grated ginger

Granola

Cinnamon

A drizzle of honey

Method:

  • Add your clementines, frozen banana, mango and passionfruit into a blender. Blitz on high for a few seconds, until the fruit has begun to combine.

  • Add in your honey, turmeric, and a scoop of Sunrise Spark powder. Splash just a little bit of your chosen milk in too, then blitz again until combined. (Top Tip: Add your milk slowly - you don’t want to thin the mixture out too much!

  • When the mixture is slightly thicker than a regular smoothie, switch off the blender and pour into a bowl. Add your choice of toppings, and enjoy!
